The Complete Guide to Hair Extensions: Tape-In, Keratin Bond, and Weft

← Back to the Journal

Hair extensions have improved enormously over the last decade. The methods available today are lighter, more natural-looking, and easier to maintain than what was standard even five years ago. But the range of options also means that choosing the wrong method for your hair type, lifestyle, or budget is a real possibility. This guide breaks down the three main methods we use at The One.

Tape-in extensions

Tape-in extensions are the most popular method for good reason. Thin wefts of hair are sandwiched around your natural hair using a medical-grade adhesive tape. The result lays flat against the head, which means they are nearly undetectable and comfortable to wear.

The installation takes two to four hours depending on volume. Move-ups (repositioning as your hair grows) are typically needed every six to eight weeks. The method is gentle on the hair and works well for clients with medium to thick natural hair who want to add length, volume, or both.

If you color your hair, tape-ins can be toned or lightly colored to match. Avoid applying conditioner or oils directly to the bonds, as this weakens the adhesive.

Keratin bond extensions

Keratin bonds (also called fusion extensions) attach individual strands of hair to small sections of your natural hair using a keratin-based glue melted with a heat tool. The result is the most natural-looking method available. Because each strand moves independently, the extensions are difficult to detect even in updos.

The application is time-intensive — expect four to six hours for a full head — and removal requires a special solution to dissolve the bond without damaging your natural hair. Move-ups are typically done every three to four months.

Keratin bonds are best suited for clients with medium to coarse hair who want a semi-permanent result and are comfortable with the investment in application time.

Weft extensions (hand-tied)

Hand-tied wefts are sewn onto small, beaded rows that are anchored to your natural hair without glue or heat. The method is the gentlest on the hair and produces a very natural, full look that works particularly well for adding volume.

The rows require tightening every six to eight weeks as your hair grows. Installation takes two to four hours depending on how many rows are needed. Wefts are the preferred method for clients with fine or fragile hair because there is no chemical or heat involvement.

How to choose

The right method comes down to your hair density, how long you want to keep the extensions in, and how much ongoing maintenance you are willing to commit to. A proper consultation is essential before any installation. At The One, every extension service begins with a detailed assessment of your hair health, texture, and lifestyle before we recommend a method.
